Abstract
The rapid development of digital computers as calculation tools, processors of vast quantities of data and as an efficient means of communication has served as one of the main factors in the development of structural engineering over the latter half of the 20th century and will undoubtedly continue to be so throughout this century. While the impact has already been noted at both a practical and teaching level, there is still much to do both with regards to design and calculation of developments in the field of instrumentation, in measurement techniques, dato recording and in the control of materials and this is having, and will increasingly continue to have, an important impact in the field of structures. This article describes some of the impacts that these new technologies have had and attempts to forecast.
