Abstract
The first railway line from Stockton to Darlington came into service in 1825 and this new mode of transport was seen as an ideal way of transporting passengers and goods from one place to another. During the 19th century and the start of the 20th century the railway continued to be the most widely used method of transport throughout Europe and the World. On the advent of the road revolution and the arrival of motor cars, the railway gradually lost its market share but now, on account of environmental and safety reasons, this method of transport is beginning to show a resurgence. This recovery goes hand in hand with increased speed and the reduction in travel times which have been achieved as a result of innovation and the technological progress seen in railway safety systems.
