Abstract
The 6.5 metre diameter sloping bore required for the housing of the penstock to the Muella II Hydroelectric Plant runs at an angle of 46º through a cretaceous formation of chalk and marl, and where it was established to form the first 380 metres of its length by 1.80 metre diameter raise boring prior to the final bench excavation. In view of the instability of the soil which made it impossible to reach the diameter of 12? inches, it was decided to improve the ground prior to the final widening of the pilot hole, using grout injections from a pipe installed from the auxiliary gallery, throughout the 60 metres length of the initial pilot hole. The present article describes the definition and development of this treatment with cement and microcement grouts, injected by impregnation and fracturing under high pressure of 30 bars and controlled volumes of 150 to 40 litres per session. The article gives the conclusions obtained from an analysis of the results of the work and which made it possible to successfully complete the pilot hole and the ensuing excavation of this section of the sloping bore.
