Abstract
There is increasing concern about the influence of different parameters that characterise a rock mass geometrically and geomechanically, when this is adopted as a foundation for gravity dams. Several authors have worked in this field with different approaches and characterizations. This statistic study has been developed to calculate the reliability of gravity dams founded on rock mass and combine the latest statistic advances and geomechanical characterizations in the proposed calculation model. For this reason, this model statistically defines a safety factor for the calculation of structure reliability and where the input variables have also been statistically characterized by means of mean and dispersion values. Hoek & Brown (1980) and Barton & Choubey (1974) failure criteria have been adopted for the rock mass and discontinuity characterisation, respectively. A whole series of curves correlating the statistical values of these input variables and the structure reliability have been obtained as an example for a particular case.
