El río Yangtze y la presa de las tres gargantas

El río Yangtze es el tercer río más largo y caudaloso del mundo, y constituye uno de los ejes vitales para el desarrollo de la China. Pero también a lo largo de la historia ha significado uno de los peligros más importantes para la población asentada en sus llanuras de inundación, allí se han producido gran parte de las inundaciones históricas más catastróficas de la tierra. En este artículo se describen las características del río Yangtze, principalmente en el tramo final de su curso alto, donde se ubican las Tres Gargantas. Se hace una reseña de la Presa de las Tres Gargantas y de su estado actual de construcción, desarrollando las peculiares características hidrológicas, y su importante papel en la mitigación de los daños producidos por las avenidas.

Abstract
The Yangste, the third largest and longest river in the world, is a vital element in the development of China, but it has always been a menace to the population of the area which has suffered some of the most disastrous floods ever known. This article gives some characteristic of the Yangste River, particularly the final stretch the upper course, the site of the Three Gorges. Some details are given of the great dam under construction at this point and the present state of the project. An outline is given of the special hydrological features of the construction and of their importance in mitigating the damage caused by flooding.
